Hybrid solar combines net-metering savings with battery backup for the circuits that matter most. It costs more to install than a bare on-grid system — but because it's grid-tied, it qualifies for a subsidy off-grid can't claim, typically landing its net cost in between the two.

What It Is

A hybrid system is grid-tied, exactly like an on-grid system — it exports surplus for net-metering credit. The difference is a battery bank and a hybrid inverter sit in between, so when the grid goes down, your chosen backup circuits switch to battery power automatically instead of shutting off.

What's In the System

Components Explained

Solar Panels

Mounted on the roof, typically facing south for maximum yield. Panels are built from a few core cell technologies:

  • Monocrystalline — cut from a single silicon crystal, the highest efficiency and most compact option, the standard for residential roofs with limited space.
  • Polycrystalline (multicrystalline) — made from multiple silicon crystals, slightly lower efficiency at a lower cost.
  • Bifacial — generates from both the front and rear face, useful where rear-side reflected light can be captured too.
  • TOPCon — an ultra-thin tunnel oxide-passivated contact layer, a newer high-efficiency cell technology.

Hybrid Inverter

The core of a hybrid system — a single unit that replaces both a grid-tie inverter and a charge controller, built on newer technology than either standalone option:

  • Lithium-optimized — direct integration with the battery management system (BMS) extends battery life to 15-20 years or more.
  • 97%+ efficiency — dual MPPT captures more solar across varying sunlight conditions and cuts conversion losses by 5-10%.
  • Seamless transfer — switches between grid-tied and backup mode automatically, typically within milliseconds of an outage.
  • Future-proof — battery capacity can be expanded later without replacing the inverter.

Battery Bank

By default, sized the same as an equivalent off-grid system's battery for maximum outage coverage — though it can be sized down to just your essential circuits if you'd rather save on upfront cost. Wired at 12V, 24V, or 48V depending on load, in one of two chemistries:

  • Lithium-ion (LFP) — higher upfront cost, but lasts 15-20 years, tolerates deeper discharge, and needs far less maintenance. The recommended choice for most hybrid installs.
  • Lead-acid — lower upfront cost, but typically lasts only 3-5 years and needs a larger bank for the same usable backup capacity.

Bidirectional Net Meter

Replaces your existing meter to separately track units exported to and imported from the grid each month — the basis of your net-metering credit, identical to an on-grid system.

Critical Loads Panel & ATS

A separate circuit panel for the loads you want backed up (lights, fridge, Wi-Fi, fans) — an automatic transfer switch isolates just these circuits onto battery power during an outage. If you only need these covered, we can size the battery around them instead of full off-grid capacity, for extra savings.

Mounting Structure & BOS

Rust-resistant, hot-dip galvanized mounting at the correct tilt angle, plus combiner boxes, cabling, earthing, and lightning protection — the balance-of-system components that keep everything safe and code-compliant.

How We Size Your Hybrid Battery Bank

Our default quote matches an equivalent off-grid system's battery capacity for maximum backup — but because a hybrid battery only has to cover the circuits you choose, not your whole home, it can be sized smaller if you'd rather save on upfront cost.

Backup Load Selection

Which circuits you want powered through an outage — lights, fridge, Wi-Fi, fans. Our default pricing matches an equivalent off-grid battery for maximum coverage, but sizing for just these circuits instead of your whole home can bring the cost down further.

Depth of Discharge (DoD)

Batteries are sized so the system only uses ~90% of rated capacity, keeping 10% in reserve to protect long-term battery health.

Round-Trip Efficiency

Roughly 15% of energy is lost in the charge-discharge cycle itself — battery capacity is sized up to account for this.

Outage Duration Target

Typically sized for 4-8 hours of backup rather than multi-day autonomy, since the grid tops the battery back up every day the sun's out.

A hybrid system's grid-tied (on-grid) capacity qualifies for the same combined central + UP subsidy as a pure on-grid system — we handle both applications end-to-end.

Why the net cost can still beat off-grid: a hybrid system costs more upfront than the same-spec off-grid system (extra net-metering hardware), but off-grid systems don't qualify for any subsidy at all. Hybrid Solar FAQs

Architecturally, very little — both use a hybrid-capable inverter and a battery bank of the same capacity by default. The difference is the grid connection: a hybrid system stays net-metered to the grid, exporting surplus for credit and importing when needed, while an off-grid system has no grid connection at all. That grid tie-in means a hybrid system costs a bit more upfront (bidirectional meter, DISCOM interconnection) — but it's also the only reason hybrid qualifies for subsidy, which usually brings its net cost below an equivalent off-grid system. You can also size a hybrid's battery down to just your essential circuits for further savings, since the grid backs up the rest.
